Hi friends, welcome back! I last posted my Foodie Friday in February, so this series is long overdue for a comeback. Jon and I haven’t been going out as much, but when we do go out, it’s to a really great restaurant. We’ve embraced the “quality over quantity” motto regarding dining out this year so this post will only contain the highlights over the last seven or so months. (Warning: this post will cause hunger)
I’ll start as I normally do with my Dominique Ansel Cronut roundup. I actually took a few months hiatus from them because the flavors weren’t super appealing this summer. March’s flavor was Yuzu & Coconut and I thought it was the perfect spring flavor! It had a light citrusy taste with a creamy coconut aftertaste.
April’s flavor was Summer Berry & Crème Brûlée and was as good as it looked! It was filled with blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry jam with a sweet aftertaste.
May’s Cronut was a Strawberry Jam & Pandan Ganache. I tasted a pretty strong strawberry flavor with a creamy vanilla like aftertaste from the Pandan.
Lastly, September’s Cronut flavor was Butter Pecan & Mascarpone. I was a little disappointed because mine wasn’t very filled so I can’t speak much on the flavor. This was the flavor that ended my hiatus, but it sadly didn’t live up to the hype in my head. Quality control must’ve skipped this batch.
Conwell Coffee recently opened by us, and this is our new favorite coffee shop. It’s located in the old Life and Trust bank and it feels like you’ve stepped back in time to the 1930s. The coffee bar is located behind the old teller booth and it’s got a great atmosphere. I love their coffee but I think their croissant breakfast sandwiches steal the show. If you’re ever in Lower Manhattan I’d highly recommend starting your morning at Conwell Coffee. (second pic is from here)
The Egg Shop is a chill brunch spot focusing mainly on egg inspired dishes. They invited us in and we really enjoyed our meal here. I ordered the Sausage egg & cheese sandwich and it had a spicy little kick. Jon enjoyed his El Capitan burrito and we shared some apple cider brunchkins for dessert that were the perfect exclamation to our meal.
Rubirosa has been on our list for quite some time and we finally made it in with our friends. We got their famous tie-dye pizza and a hot honey pizza. This pizza was different than I expected because it was very thin and crispy. I had pretty high expectations and was a little underwhelmed, but it was still tasty. I think the move here is to order the tie-dye pizza and then share a pasta, they all looked incredible.
Federoff’s Roast Pork allows NYers to get their cheesesteak fix without leaving the city. We went to their location in Williamsburg with our friends and ordered the classic cheesesteak with a side of Bronson fries. The portions here are massive so make sure you come hungry! I might have to go back for their Italian hoagie once I can eat deli meat again, it looks amazing!
Little Ruby’s is a cute, casual Australian restaurant with a few locations around the city. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable. My friend and I dined at the West Village location and shared the brussels sprouts, truffle fries, spicy vodka pasta, and chicken schnitzel. The pasta was my favorite dish and seems to be the most popular.
My friend had her baby shower at the Austrian restaurant Schilling and it was delicious! It’s located down here in Fidi, but I hadn’t been until this past weekend. The chicken schnitzel was the biggest thing I’d ever been served! I preferred the schnitzel over the spaetzle but they were both perfect for a rainy, fall day.
We took Jon’s parents to L’artusi for lunch and it was just as good as we remembered. We started with the arancini and house-made focaccia. This time we ordered some different pastas and I picked the cacio e pepe and Jon went with the Spaccatelle (braised wild boar ragu).
Au Cheval has been on our list for a while because it’s one of the most popular burgers in the city. It’s also a sister restaurant to 4 Charles Prime Rib which has the most coveted burger in the city although the people on the internet say there isn’t much difference between the two. We came here for brunch with Jon’s parents, and I couldn’t believe my eyes when actor James Marsden was seated right next to us. He was paying as we were getting seated, but it did add some excitement to our lunch. I went with the standard burger and Jon got the full experience with the fried egg and bacon. As soon as he took a bite, I could see the corners of his mouth turning up into a smile. We can confirm this restaurant and burger are worth the hype! The original Au Cheval is in Chicago so if you’re ever there you should check it out!
